A non-functional cambelt timing belt can make a sizeable dent in your pocket as its repair or replacement is an expensive affair. Here is when to tighten your resolve when it comes to cambelt issues and get the team at Hamilton Automotive involved.

Signs that you need a new cambelt

  • Abnormally excessive exhaust emissions: Your otherwise normal car suddenly starts churning out acrid smoke from the exhaust. Be warned that your malfunctioning cambelt or timing belt could be putting the engine under too much strain and could require replacement.
  • Shudders of the car: Over time, a faulty cambelt could cause the car to experience unexplained and ominous shakes and shudders. A belt that is functioning well will keep the engine in perfectly timed motion you will feel no sudden jerks. With a long time fault in the cambelt this problem will only go away after replacement.
  • High-pitched sound emission: If the cambelt required replacement in the near future, it will indicate this by the engine emitting a shrill whirring sound starting up and/or idling.
  • Faulty ignition: A cambelt or timing belt that needs replacement will make your car take many failed attempts to start up. This is because the revolution of the faulty cambelt loses sync with that of the crankshaft.
  • RPM pull: If your engine starts emitting sounds and feels dragged down between a particular range of revs, it could very well indicate a need to replace the cambelt.
  • Visually damaged cambelt: Missing or grated teeth or ribs and spotting of engine oil and/or coolant are both sure symptoms that a new cambelt or timing belt will be on your shopping list soon.
